ONS Output Area Classification compares geographic areas in terms of a range of population characteristics derived from the 2001 Census, and groups them into a hierarchy of clusters sharing similar combinations of those characteristics.

Rural and Urban Areas in the East Riding
Rural and urban area classifications were produced by ONS in 2004. Each small area (Output Area or Lower Super Output Area) in the East Riding is given a classification based on the predominant settlement pattern in the area. Areas are viewed as `urban` if the majority of the population in the area falls inside an `urban area` with a population of 10,000 or more. Classifications for rural areas include town and fringe, village, hamlet and isolated dwellings.

Child Well-Being Index 2007 - Reports and Tables

International Economic Migrants in East Riding of Yorkshire
There has been a substantial increase in the number of foreign nationals coming to work in the area over the last two years. This report is based on research in support of the Audit Commission`s study of the impact of overseas migrant workers on local areas and services. It was presented to a workshop organised by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 4th October 2006, on the implications of economic migrants for the East Riding.

Natural Hull Economy Report
Kingston upon Hull City Council commissioned consultants Local Futures to undertake a study of the `natural Hull economy` in May 2005. The `natural economy` refers to the economic interactions between the city of Hull and the surrounding areas, and this report uses a series of snapshots of economic, social and environmental considerations to detail the key challenges facing Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The Rural Statistics Unit at Defra has produced a report addressing Census data and access to key services for rural and urban areas. The Census data gives a rural and urban split for population information, age structures and other variables. The report details access to services with specific regard to the numbers of rural households within distances of key services such as banks, GPs, petrol stations, Post Offices, supermarkets, primary and secondary schools.

Progress in the Region 2009
Progress in the Region 2009 is a comprehensive collection of regional information, statistics and analysis - it highlights the key areas which regional policy needs to address. It measures how Yorkshire and Humber is performing and whether it is making the progress towards the sustainable development it seeks - spanning and integrating social, economic and environmental factors. The document reports performance against the 32 high level indicators set out in its overarching `Advancing Together` framework, taking into account a wider spread of over 50 measures that contribute to them. It also provides data and intelligence on many other topics that provide context and which will strengthen evidence and inform decision making in the region.

It holds information on the rural economy, infrastructure and environment in the region for 2006. The report follows similar themes to the region`s main annual monitoring document "Progress in the Region". It looks at the Advancing Together regional indicators from a rural perspective.

Born Abroad - the BBC`s immigration map of Britain
A new BBC online Immigration Map reveals that 4.7% of the Yorkshire and Humber population were born outside Britain. The map can be accessed online, and gives information about where people born outside Britain live, where they were born, and the increases and decreases in the numbers of people born outside Britain since 1991.
